Do the Dishes and Win!

Big Brother is а reality ТV show that brings а number of people together in а house for а period of time. Cameras and microphones record their actions and they appear оn ТV. Each week viewers vote for their favourite resident, аnd the least favourite housemate has to leave the house. This happens until there is only one housemate left, who goes home with а cash prize. Big Brother began in the Netherlands in 1999 and since then the idea has spread like wildfire throughout the world. There have been Big Brother shows in over 70 countries worldwide.

In its early years, Big Brother was а huge hit. Originally, people saw it as а fascinating social experiment. Viewers could реер into the lives of ordinary people twenty-four hours а day. It was very interesting for millions of young аnd old viewers around the world to see how different types of people live together.

One thing that hasn't changed in the Big Brother household is that some residents get оn like а house оn fire, while others drive each other crazy. А major source of conflict for the contestants, but also entertainment for the viewers, is housework. If all housemates do their share of household chores housemates usually live in harmony. Yet а messy housemate who doesn't help around the house isn't very welcome in the Big Brother "family". In fact, the winner is usually the person who does their share of chores and doesn't complain about anybody else not doing theirs.

Although over the years Big Brother has become less popular, there is still а huge audience eagerly awaiting to see how far their favourite or least favourite character will go to win the big cash prize in the end. Who knows? Мауbе some of us see а bit of ourselves in the show!

American National No Housework Day

No Housework Day is one of those days you see on calendars on the Internet but don’t know where it came from. It is always on April 7th. It is one day of the year when it is OK to do nothing in the house. Everybody has the day off from doing the household chores. It’s OK to let the dishes and washing pile up; it’s no problem to let another layer of dust settle on top of the TV; and it’s absolutely fine to leave the vacuum cleaner in its corner for the day. The laundry will be just fine in the basket until tomorrow. And as for cooking, make sure you have a home-delivery phone number handy. Or even better, get yourself off to a restaurant. This is also a good day for those who never do anything around the house, who never lift a finger, to appreciate those who do the housework.

You could celebrate it a little differently; if you’re not the person who normally does the housework, why not take over just for today? Or if you have an elderly neighbour, how about offering to help out with chores this No Housework Day?

What is housework, exactly? If you never do it, you probably never think about this. It is a lot of hard work and someone does it every single day. It starts while the rest of the house is still asleep. Next time you wake up, listen to see if you can hear the washing machine working or smell the coffee machine. It happens while you are still trying to open your eyes at the breakfast table. Then while you are at school, the breakfast dishes are magically cleaned, the tables wiped and the dishes all put in their place. You come home from school and the bath is clean, again. Your shirts are washed, ironed, and hanging in your closet, again. The toothpaste tube in the bathroom is never empty. Who does all this invisible housework?

A recent study conducted at the University of Michigan found that the average married American woman does 17 hours of housework per week! After a long day at school or work, housework is the last thing anyone wants to come home to do.

Doctors say that it is essential for people with busy lifestyles to relax. Relaxation can lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce headaches, and improve concentration.

Celebrate National No Housework Day by ignoring the dirty dishes in the sink and the piles of laundry that need to be done and just relax. You deserve it!

35. April 7th is the day off in the USA.

36. Home-delivery from restaurants is free on No Housework Day.

Hanami a flowering celebration!

The beginning of spring (March-April) is a very special time in Japan, because this is when Japan's famous cherry trees come into flower.

The Japanese celebrate this happy time with festivals and flower-viewing parties. At the end of winter, everyone's excitement starts to grow. The whole country wants to know the exact day when the cherry flowers ('sakura') will appear. Starting in February, weathermen try to guess when this day will be.

When the first flowers open on the trees, national joy breaks out! There are rides and games for children in the street, music and dance performances, tea ceremonies, flower displays, and much more. But the most special thing that people do at this time is have 'hanami' parties.

Hanami means flower watching. In hanami parties, families and friends take a picnic and go and sit under a cherry tree to look at and admire the flowers. Hanami parties take place during the daytime and also at night, because when it is dark, lights light up the cherry trees.

Hanami is very important to the Japanese. Cherry blossoms appear on trees for only one week before they fall to the ground and die, and for the Japanese this symbolises the short nature of childhood and life.

So hanami is a time when Japanese people like to think about how important life is.

The Dubai shopping festival

A relatively new addition to the age-old tradition of global, national and local festivals, the Duhai Shopping Festival, or the DSF as it's more commonly called, is an event that offers something for everyone. It lasts for about a month, and takes place in one of the winter months every year.

What first began as a tourist attraction in 1996 is now a celebration of buying and selling that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors. Over 2,300 shops offer an enormous variety of goods at very low prices. Festival-goers will find even more bargains at one of the most popular attractions of the DSF, the Night Souk. This is a big street market that is open from the afternoon till the small hours of the morning. There, it is customary for the shoppers to haggle with the sellers over the price of something, until both the buyer and the seller agree on a satisfactory price.

But the DSF is not only about shopping. There is a wide range of activities that keep everyone in the family happy. Over the years, events such as a food festival, fashion show, carnival and a fireworks display have offered visitors an enjoyable experience. The festival organizers keep surprising visitors with new, bigger and better events every year.
